THE COWS
Beef Shorthorns
We have a small herd of Pedigree Beef Shorthorns who enjoy life on the farm moving round to fresh grass everyday.

We are trialling AMP (Adaptive Multi Paddock) grazing which sees the cows moved once, or sometimes twice, a day on to fresh grass. The idea being that they eat what they would usually ignore, concentrate their manure and trample some which helps build soil health and feed the micro-organisms living in the soil. Equalling healthy soil, healthy pastures and therefore healthy cows.

Beef Shorthorns are known for their hardiness, docility and ability to forage as well as producing top quality beef.

The Jersey Girls
We have two gorgeous Jersey cows: Tessa & Elsie. These girls are the bosses on the farm. They enjoy a good head scratch and a cuddle and are often seen leaning over a gate waiting for some attention when in a field close to the farmyard.

We milk both cows once a day. We milk share with their calves, and separate them only at night (to ensure we get some milk), reuniting them after milking and allowing them to suckle all day long. The girls wait patiently near the gate at 10am, walk to the milking parlour where they enjoy their oats and fennel seeds whilst we milk them one at a time by machine. They then return back to the field are reunited with their calves and enjoy the rest of the day eating grass, relaxing and chewing their cud watching the Swallows dart and swirl over her head relieving the herd of the flies.

At the moment we can't sell our milk as we aren't registered to sell raw milk with the Environmental Health, so we selfishly enjoy their creamy milk, butter and ice cream. However, we hope to be able to do so on a small scale one day. Watch this space!
